Only recently, Prof. Okamoto’s team at the Medical University of Vienna has reported that sun protection might also protect from disease progression and not only from initiating cancer. Patients who reported to improve sun protection after the diagnosis of melanoma had a better outcome (survival). The electronic version of this publication can be found here: academic.oup.com/ced/advance-article/doi/10.1093/ced/llae487/7934877?login=true

There are mainly 2 types of skin cancer: melanoma and non melanoma skin cancer. Melanoma is the more aggressive type of cancer capable of metastasizing early compared to non melanoma skin cancer. For both cancer types UV radiation is regarded to be the main exogenous risk factor. In general, normal cells turn into cancerous cells due to mutations in genes which changes the function of proteins. As a consequence, cell functions are altered leading to an uncontrolled growth, proliferation and spreading to distant organs.

Therefore, health care providers warn to avoid excessive sun exposure and the use of sun beds to prevent developing skin cancer. But what about after having been diagnosed of skin cancer, especially melanoma? This study shows that sun protection could also improve life expectancy after having been diagnosed of skin cancer. The precise mechanism behind this effect remains to be elucidated however, distant effects of UV exposure especially on the immune system has been described in the past.

Always use products that do not clog the pores. An oil-free formulation is the best choice, so that pores are not blocked further.

Do not forget sun protection (broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF, avoiding direct sunlight, staying in the shade, creating additional shade with a hat, and so on). UV radiation can also trigger intolerance reactions — both to creams and to certain medications.

Avoid heat. Sweating can cause acne to flare up again.

In principle, UV light has an anti-inflammatory effect, which is why ordinary acne — like many other inflammatory skin conditions — tends to improve in summer. Indirect sunlight in the shade is entirely sufficient for this. There are, however, forms of acne that occur specifically in summer, such as acne aestivalis (also known as “Mallorca acne”).

Direct sunlight should therefore be avoided, particularly during the most intense hours of the day. Excessive sun exposure can lead to hypersensitivity of the skin and thus cause irritation. Sweating should also be avoided, as it can clog the pores and encourage acne breakouts. On hot days or during exercise it is best to wear breathable clothing and to wash the face immediately after sweating.

If acne is particularly severe in summer, or does not respond to conventional measures, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist, who can recommend an individual treatment tailored to your specific needs.

A recent publication in the scientific journal European Journal of Cancer confirms the role of sequential digital dermatoscopy and full-body scan (total body scan) for early detection of melanomas in high risk individuals. The device is 1,5m apart from the patient and can detect changes of moles from the distance: a helpful feature nowadays.

Melanoma of the skin causes 90% of all skin cancer deaths. In a recent publication by a multidisciplinary collaboration of the European Dermatology Forum (EDF), the European Association of Dermato-Oncology (EADO), and the European Organization of Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) based on systematic literature review and esperts’ experience confirms that sequential digital dermatoscopy and full-body photography (total body scan) can detect early melanomas in high risk individuals.

What are water warts?

Water warts (molluscum contagiosum) are round, small nodules with a central dimple. They are self limited in principle, however, water warts (molluscum contagiosum) are infectious and can spread on the skin of the affected person as well as others, who had direct or indirect contact with the infected person. Water warts (molluscum contagiosum) are usually symptom-free, except the alterations on the skin, but sometimes, they can be itchy as well.

Are water warts contagious?

In the latter situation, one is tempted to scratch, spreading thereby the infectious content of the warts on the hands and surrounding skin.

These warts are caused by a virus called poxvirus and can release hundreds of thousands of virus particles when squeezed or violated, spreading the viruses and causing new warts.

The warts themselves are not harmful to the health of the carriers and can even remit by itself. However, spontaneous remission is not reliable and other people can be infected with the virus if not treated. If someone touches such a wart, disinfection of the hands is recommended to avoid spread of the virus.
