If you struggle with acne, there are a few things worth bearing in mind during the summer months to ease symptoms and improve the health of your skin.

  1. Always use products that do not clog the pores. An oil-free formulation is the best choice, so that pores are not blocked further.
  2. Do not forget sun protection (broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF, avoiding direct sunlight, staying in the shade, creating additional shade with a hat, and so on). UV radiation can also trigger intolerance reactions — both to creams and to certain medications.
  3. Avoid heat. Sweating can cause acne to flare up again.

In principle, UV light has an anti-inflammatory effect, which is why ordinary acne — like many other inflammatory skin conditions — tends to improve in summer. Indirect sunlight in the shade is entirely sufficient for this. There are, however, forms of acne that occur specifically in summer, such as acne aestivalis (also known as “Mallorca acne”).

Direct sunlight should therefore be avoided, particularly during the most intense hours of the day. Excessive sun exposure can lead to hypersensitivity of the skin and thus cause irritation. Sweating should also be avoided, as it can clog the pores and encourage acne breakouts. On hot days or during exercise it is best to wear breathable clothing and to wash the face immediately after sweating.

If acne is particularly severe in summer, or does not respond to conventional measures, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist, who can recommend an individual treatment tailored to your specific needs.
